Our Stories

Unprotected sex can happen for many reasons, here real women share their experiences.

I took the morning after pill on two occasions. The first time was after a one night stand I wish hadn’t happened. However, it wasn’t until two days after I went to get the morning after pill. I had taken a pregnancy test the morning after, not fully understanding how and when you should take a test. Luckily for me, my sister informed me that I could still take the morning after pill, so I went to my local pharmacy and avoided an unplanned pregnancy. The second occasion, I had unprotected sex with a friend. I didn’t ask him to use a condom – I felt too embarrassed to ask. So I got the morning after pill by myself the next day. Mine is quite a straightforward story. I was 19 and got caught up in the moment with my new boyfriend and we had unprotected sex. The next day, I went to a pharmacy in town, where I was given the morning after pill. The pharmacist was lovely. No judgement or anything! She also gave me some great advice on contraceptive choices that I hadn’t been made aware of before and the following month I had a coil fitted after she had suggested it. Rebecca, 31, Helderkruin

I’d been off the pill for a few days but my fiancé and I always used condoms as a backup. The condom broke and I was worried that now the contraceptive pill was out of my system and I could become pregnant. I didn’t know much about the morning after pill and I wasn’t going to take it at first, but then I spoke to my pharmacist who spoke to me in private in the patient counselling area. It felt a lot more comfortable than discussing it in front of everyone in the pharmacy at the time. She answered all my questions for me and was very helpful. I’m glad I took the morning after pill, you know, just in case. Anonymous, 22, Durban

I’ve only taken the morning after pill once and it was because my partner at the time was an idiot and “forgot” to pull out. Before then I’d only ever used condoms and never had sex without them, but this was the one time unfortunately. I’ve always been wary about taking meds in the first place, and I’ve heard many stories about possible side effects, but my experience was rather decent. I got like one small cramp and that’s it. No nausea or feeling ill. Anonymous, 23
