What to know before going to the GP

Going to the doctor for contraception can seem like a daunting task. But rest assured that your appointment is completely confidential, and your doctor is there to answer all of your questions and concerns, and to give you advice about being safe when sexually active. Read on to find out more about what you can expect when you visit your GP.

What’s the best way to find the right professional for contraceptive methods?

When it comes to finding the right contraceptive method for you, there are many options. You can get free contraception from most general practitioners, community contraceptive clinics and some sexual health clinics. A school nurse can also provide more information if you’re in school or college, or you can ask for advice from a relative or friend.

When should you see a doctor for contraception?

This decision is entirely up to you. You may find it useful to have a consultation before you have sex for the first time, to answer any questions. If you’ve already had sex, having a check-up is a good way to ensure that everything is functioning normally, and to find out more about which contraceptive method works for you. Even if you’re not currently sexually active, consulting a doctor is a helpful way to ask any questions you may have to prepare yourself. Your GP will be able to answer any concerns you may have related to your menstrual cycle.

Can you see a Pharmacist by yourself if you’re 12 years or older?

Yes – you do not need your parents’ permission for a consultation, and your Pharmacist is bound by medical confidentiality when it comes to what is discussed. Your Pharmacist won’t communicate anything to your parents, except in exceptional cases where your life is at risk. If you’d prefer not to go by yourself, you can take a relative or friend along for extra support.

Will you need to have a gynecological examination during your appointment?

No.
